I loved the tour! It's always nice to get a sliver of what goes on in another's community. And this came with sound effects. 🎤
I had a unique tree in my front yard when I lived at the house in Melbourne. The woodpeckers liked to drill into it with their beaks. There were multiple circles where they had done their work. I actually came across it when I was doing "My Photography Hobby" but I ran out of room to post it. I'm thinking of doing a "Birds" feature, so I'll try to remember it for that.
Thank God I have not had any experience with bats. I'm like you, I don't care for things that can jump on me. I've had my fair share of run-ins with lizards and snakes. That last one being the worst. They didn't jump on me but let's just say, they were very near me. I'll have to tell the story someday.
Of COURSE you have a LFL in your yard. That is so like you! Would love to see a post dedicated to this, since you’re sort of offering. We have a great busy one in here in Brooklyn Heights on Pierrpont Street. The only problem is it’s often so stuffed with. Books it’s impossible to donate! We need a bigger box, or more locations.
The worst problem I have is keeping it sealed. Rain doesn’t get in, but occasional insects do. Mike just did some maintenance so hopefully it will be good for a while. I keep it full of books, but I have an entire bookcase in the storage area of my event venue dedicated to the overflow that people donate.
Plethora and shit-ton -- two words that mean the same thing!
Yes we have a bat story, but it's a bad story that involves an encounter with a bat and then a much worse encounter with the US health care system because of a possible rabies exposure. And my fave street as of today is the eucalyptus tree because the smell takes me right back to Australia!
Yeah--I really wanted to make some bat boxes and slowly migrate them to a more wooded area down the hill, but...ain’t nobody got time for that right now!🤣
Such a wonderful post, Holly - thank you for the guided tour! The library is wonderful! That bat of yours was ENORMOUS - I've only ever got up close and personal with the pipistrelles that roost in one of our walls - they're tiny.
I loved seeing that catalpa leaf - and what spooky timing, because I was reminiscing with my mum just last weekend when we walked past a huge Indian bean tree - she reminded me that ever since she'd introduced me to 'Catalpa bignonioides' I had called it 'the tree with the big nonnies'! I'm not great with plant knowledge (to my great shame, as my family are all horticulturists), but I adore their Latin names. I've been working on a post about that, actually - and yes, the big nonnies will certainly feature! 🤣
If you are botanically challenged, as many of us are these days, I highly recommend getting the ‘Picture This’ app on your phone. There is a paid subscription that allows identification of many other things, but the free version is fully functional for plants. It allows you to take a picture of leaves and/or flowers and gives you a similar picture along with the common name, a list of pseudonyms, the Latin name and will even recommend remedies if it notices that the plant is unhealthy.
Thanks, Mike - I’ll check it out! I often use an app called ‘Seek’ - it does plants, fungi, creepy crawlies, birds and anything else that stays still long enough. It’s got some big gaps, though, so I’ve been looking for a back-up app!
What a cool idea! I loved taking the tour of your block.
Neighborhood has a LOT of Little Libraries! They're the best thing ever. .
I do NOT love bats, and I used to see them quite a bit here at the airport where I work. Nothing says "fun!" like opening up the curtains on a bag cart and seeing one perched in a corner.
Not gonna lie, that bat looks creepy! I only see them up close in the bat house at the zoo. Pretty sure I would burn my house down if I saw one inside it. 🔥 Makes me feel better about the squirrels inside my walls - at least they are cute! Loved the virtual tour.
So cool! I loved the tour of this valley by Shangrilogs and your tour as well. This is a great way to give readers a peek into what may seem ordinary and uninteresting to us. Now I want to copy you! Thanks for the inspiration! :)
I knew the moment I read/listened to Kelton's tour that I had to do this--I didn't anticipate just how fun it would be! PLEASE be a fellow copycat and give us a tour of your corner of the world! The ordinary really is so extraordinary when you look with fresh eyes.
The library has been a source of meeting people in my community and having conversations I normally wouldn't. And I love the way kids' faces light up when they find the perfect book. I highly recommend a library in your yard, but definitely do NOT recommend the creature!
Loved this! May have to copy cat it too. 💕
Please do!

I am definitely not a fan of lizards, Matt, but interestingly, I can handle a snake. Looking forward to that photo of the tree!
Thanks for the tour - the trees, the mini-library, the bats...I enjoyed walking with you and discovering your little slice of Mississippi.

Enjoyed this. It is really fun to see how other's live. Thanks for sharing! 💟

Yikes! That’s scarier than any story from abroad!
Pretty much...
Hi Holly! This was such a great idea. Thank you for sharing your corner of the world with us. :) Have a blessed weekend.
❤️
Loved the audio track of your walk through the leaves! And always enjoy reading about Little Free Libraries. 📚
The crunch through the leaves helped inspire the post. So glad you enjoyed it!
I see bats and my brain screams RABIES
Also, that photo with the broom--well, let’s just say it’s part of a very funny video because I did not want that thing landing on me--rabies!
LOL! 🤣
"Did you hear about the disgruntled customer with rabies?"
"They were....frothing at the mouth with rage"
I'll see myself out 😶🌫️
YES!!!
We love bats, as long as they stay out of our house 😂 Great for bug control!

Same 😂

It's our strange connection across the pond, Rebecca! ESP?
I had to look up "pipistrelles"--how cute!!! But I still don't think I want to share a house with one.
Great minds think alike! Birds - bats? - of a feather flock together!!!!!

Then one day, this happened: https://youtu.be/dpannd2UQYc?t=21
Oh heck no! Nope. Nuh-uh. I'm out.
Definitely one of the stranger reasons I've ever seen for a plane coming back to the field...

Yeah...so far we haven't had any *inside* the house. If we do, I may consider the match...

Also loved the little library, since I’ve been thinking of adding one to our front yard, the weird creature not so much. 😅
