Re: including what was served at an event. I LOVE this! I've been reading about Mark Twain (in preparation for a post in "Noted" 2weeks from now.) I've seen a few menus from his birthday parties -- and they are wild. For his 70th, guests enjoyed "Green Turtle," "Fried Hominy and Current Jelly," and "Fancy Ice Creams" among other things. Maybe one day "hamburger with all the fixings" will sound equally strange.
I admit at first I thought you were going to say Rebecca called you. Then I saw what had happened. I was going to comment on the USPS (is there anyone who hasn't had a problem) but I see it was operator error. ;) I can't remember when it was but I have received packages in the past with old newspapers. One time, they were old from 20 to 30 years ago. I don't know why someone held onto them that long but it was interesting reading back what happened on such and such day.
The Woodville seems to be getting a jump on the news. The first year posted is 2202.
I'm laughing and crying at the same time here, Holly - what an absolutely delightful post! I've actually kept those precious pages of 'The Woodville Republican' with a view to writing about them myself sometime soon!
Speaking of press cuttings, I was chatting to a journalist yesterday about great newspaper headlines of the past. She told me that her favourite - the sad demise of an escaped zoo animal in a named area of Wales, UK - was: "WOLF IN CARDIGAN SHOT DEAD". Poor wolf. But I wonder how very lovely it had looked wearing that cardigan!
And of course, again, thank you for the book!!! :D :D :D
So cool the international shipment resulted in a happy story!
And what rich family history you have uncovered from the stories you found...I love reading those surprising family history facts...that I also have in my life.
Jan!!! How did I miss this wonderful comment?! Jessie just left after helping us since SIX this morning (parade cleanup in front of our event venue). He is a gem, and “John” is a perfect song to describe how I feel about him! Thank you!
Oh, Anne! You probably would have eaten it, but not I. 🫢It was very melty and had likely been carried all over town in that yellow bag. Plus we recently decided to cut out sugar for a while, so that really was the deciding factor.
These small acts of kindness reaffirm my faith in humanity. I love that you're lucky enough to have had one on your own block, and one across the ocean all at once.
Separately, I think there is a huge appetite for local journalism. I see it everywhere I turn anymore. Maybe that's a romance for "simpler times," or pushback against the homogenized clips that pass for news anymore. I dunno. But there seem to be greenshoots of a comeback here and there, and I'm here for it.
P.S. Anyone on our side of the pond that says they didn't read these exchanges in an accent is lying. lol.
We are also here for it. It's a big reason we left suburbia and moved to this one-horse town. It has it's disadvantages, for sure, and I get big city envy when I read what Anne (CAFE ANNE) and Randall (Thanks For Letting Me Share) are up to. BUT, "simpler times" can live anywhere--big city or small town--if we nurture the shoots.
This morning I popped over (a total nod to Rebecca and Lynne) to the grocery store to get a few things for dinner prep. While there, the store owner greeted me in Dutch (a saying his great grandfather used to use about being up early and smiling), the cashier (who recently lost her brother-in-law) and I chatted in the check-out line, and another employee (who struggles with addiction) bagged my groceries and walked them to my vehicle where we had a quick conversation and I encouraged him to call an accountability partner often because I could tell he was struggling on this particular day (our local people in recovery have little to no resources really, so I doubt he uses the word "sponsor").
Thanks for dropping by, Kevin. The discussion in the comments is (more than) half the fun of this!

FANCY ICE CREAMS
Right?! I really want to know what makes them "fancy"!
Very good point, Jillian! May the foods live in infamy!

When I saw the screen, I also thought Rebecca was calling me! 🤣 And yes--definitely a problem between the chair and the pen.

Oh my goodness that is hilarious! My mind immediately went to Little Red Riding Hood!

I knew my grandfather worked as a dispatcher once, but I had no idea he was bamboozled and locked in a cell!
Oh my goodness, I can only imagine this exchange between yourself and Rebecca! Brings a huge smile to my face. :)
It definitely should be in a movie script, and there should be voiceovers reading in our respective accents as we type our emails. 🤣
Love this! Such a neighborly exchange from "across the pond". Amazing and reaffirming that Kindness Lives!

Your description brought “John” to mind- an Indigo Girls song from their Beauty Queen Sister album. 🧡

What a great snapshot of your town Holly! How was the cake?

Awww, three strikes. That poor cake never had a chance!
Yes I would have for sure gobbled it up. :)
...as a NyQuil Chicken chaser!

As busy as I get, right now on a short trip with friends, I make time to read your stories. They always leave me grateful that I took the time.
Have the most fun!
